New Israeli Film Series: See the Best of recent films from Israel with Rabbi Isaac Serotta, Cantor Michael Davis and Vanessa M. Ehrlich, RJE
This class will meet on the following Tuesdays: March 16th, 23rd, April 13th, and 20th
from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
March 16th “Waltz with Bashir”, hosted by Cantor Michael Davis
Inspired by actual events, Waltz with Bashir chronicles one man's descent into his own half-forgotten past. Filmmaker Ari Folman, a veteran of Israel's First Lebanon War in the 1980s, encounters an old friend who thinks obsessively about his war experiences. Ari realizes he has no memory of his war experiences. In an effort to recover his memories, he reconnects with his old army buddies. Hailed as innovative and devastating, Waltz with Bashir fuses animation and documentary to create a stunning, powerful experience. Nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar and Winner of Israeli’s Academy Award in 2007.
March 23rd “Yana’s Friends”, hosted by Rabbi Isaac Serotta
Winner of Israel’s Academy Award in 1999, Yana’s Friends, is about Russian immigrants finding their way in Israel, with the 1991 Gulf War in the background. It is a bit slapstick, a bit erotic, and a bit serious.
April 13th, “Jellyfish”, hosted by Rabbi Isaac Serotta
Jellyfish is a poetic and magical story about three very different Israeli women living in Tel Aviv. Batya, a waitress, takes in a young child apparently abandoned at the beach. Keren is a young bride who breaks her leg and ruins her honeymoon plans. Joy, a Philippine domestic worker, who doesn't speak any Hebrew, misses the child she left behind. Their intersecting stories weave a portrait of modern Israeli life. Nominated for Israel’s Academy Award in 2007.
April 20th “Kedma”, hosted by Vanessa Ehrlich, RJE
Set seven days before the creation of the state of Israel in May 1948, a small rusted ship, with a group of concentration camp survivors from Shoah, is received at the new territory with open hostility. What happens to them during the impending outbreak of the War of Independence is revealed in this movie. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Amos Gitai, KEDMA is a beautifully photographed meditation on exile, hope, despair and the trouble-plagued history of the Jewish people.
