Jewish Women Entertainers – June Sochen is a distinguished Professor Emeritus at Northeastern Illinois University. A cultural historian specializing in women's history, minority history, and entertainment history.

October 11

Truman and The JewsLawrence Stern is a professional photographer and amateur historian. His program will cover the election of 1948, the Truman Doctrine and the former President’s views on Jews and the state of Israel. 

October 18

The 2009 Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema,Peggy Shapiro, Coordinator of the yearly festival, will preview the films to be shown this year in Chicago and Wilmette (October 29 through November 8)

October 25

Clergy Beyond Borders: New Approaches to Building Peace - Rabbi Gerry Serotta, the immediate past Chair of Rabbis for Human Rights-North America and the executive director of Clergy Beyond Borders, will tell us about this new organization.

The Power of One - The Lakeside Religious School and Adult Enrichment Committee once again sponsor an opportunity to learn about several social action initiatives from organizers in the community and see how one person can help to change the world.

Peace of Mind, Body, and Spirit - Our own Margaret Moore, LCSW will lead us in discussion of Jewish meditation, which offers benefits physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually.  Meditating is one means of calming and centering ourselves.

Encouraging Healing of Abuse in the Jewish Community - Ellen Rosen-Kaplan, LCSW will discuss bearing witness to the fact that abuse happens in the Jewish community, understanding our communal reticence to discuss such things, looking at the impact of secrets and stigma, understand how healing can be achieved and the resources available for healing.

DECEMBER

 

 December 6

Shakespeare and the JewsRabbi Herbert Bronstein, Rabbi Emeritus of North Shore Congregation Israel and noted scholar will speak about how Jews are portrayed in the works of Shakespeare.

December 13

Jewish Humor – Rabbi Barry Schechter,originally from Britain, now in Skokie, will entertain and instruct us with the program of Jewish humor for which he has become well-known.

JANUARY

 

January 10

The ADL and Civil Rights – Daniel Elbaum, Director of Development for the Upper-Midwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League will update us on the important civil rights work by the ADL.

Israeli and Palestinian Politics from the perspective of Palestinians Ray Hanania, a radio journalist and stand-up comedian is engaged in reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians through humor.

Israeli and Palestinian Politics from the perspective of Israelis Amos Gil is the founder of Ir Amim (City of Nations) a group seeking to make Jerusalem sustainable and equitable to Israelis and Palestinians. He is a former head of the Israel Civil Rights Association.

Israeli and Palestinian Politics from the perspective of Americans Aliza Becker, Deputy Director of Brit Tzedek v’Shalom has family living in Israel.  Saffiya Shillo is a social worker in Chicago with family living in the West Bank.

Rescuers of The ShoahLakeside’s own Jim Schuster will speak about who protected Jews during WWII, how they sheltered Jews and why.

The Shoah in Hollywood Film – Rabbi Isaac Serotta will show us the various ways in which the Holocaust has been portrayed.

One Book / One Congregation – Lakeside’s Rick Schuster will moderate a discussion of The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs.

Gender and Judaism – The Lakeside Sisterhood sponsors Rachel Haverlock, professor of Jewish Studies and English at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a proud contributor to The Torah: A Women’s Commentary.
